AI in Action - Read, Learn, and DO

There’s a lot of talk about AI in education today — too much if it by folks trying to make a quick buck peddling “sit ’n git” PD or colorful infographics.

We know that you are interested in substance and inspiration. We also know you are capable of sharing complex learning adventures with students of all ages. That’s why we’re working hard to help educators embrace AI as a means to enrich educational experiences, amplify human potential, and inform our decisions about inventing the future of education.

Here are three things clever, creative, curious, and competent educators, such as yourself, can do to make sense of AI while maintaining agency over an increasingly complex and technologically sophisticated world.

  1. READRead Gary Stager’s short essay chronicling the development of AI in education through a constructive lens. In this short article, Gary explores the deep roots that a learning-by-doing approach shares with the history of Artificial Intelligence, Piaget, and progressive ideals.
  2. LEARN—Join Jaymes Dec and Gary Stager for an exciting hands-on workshop, Creative Computation and AI. Participants will develop understanding of powerful computational AI concepts and inform classroom practice where learners are in the driver’s seat. Jaymes and Gary have designed a full day of hands-on activities to bring classroom-tested powerful ideas to life for students and teachers alike. This workshop takes place the day before the Constructing Modern Knowledge Summer Institute, on July 8, 2024.
  3. DO—Attend Constructing Modern Knowledge 2024 where you can design, build, and program intelligent machines and develop computational fluency for 4 remarkable days. You will have time for deep learning and support from our amazing faculty. Plus, you will enjoy inspiration from our guest speaker, one of the architects of the modern AI revolution, Dr. Stephen Wolfram.

Stephen Wolfram is one of the world’s most prominent experts on Artificial Intelligence. He literally wrote the book, What is ChatGPT Doing... and Why Does It Work? Not only is Dr. Wolfram a pioneer in building the tools that power AI, but he's a man deeply committed to making computational fluency accessible to school children.

Constructing Modern Knowledge 2024 is committed to making connections between child-centered learning theories and the creative construction of knowledge with computers. In addition to providing a rich sandbox where educators enjoy the luxury of time to work on personally rewarding projects, there are opportunities to interact with our guest speakers, like Dr. Wolfram, who are some of the greatest educational minds of our time.

Hope to see you there, Reader! Please share this with your friends and colleagues. 😃

Dear CMK Family, We miss you already!!!! We arrived home late last night from Manch Vegas with 10 pieces of luggage after spending two days packing up and visiting Cremeland, The Red Arrow Diner, and Puritan Backroom for the last time. The boxes start returning later this week. Words do not exist to describe how enormously proud we are of what we created together last week at Constructing Modern Knowledge. We built an alternative world filled with possibilities and once again demonstrated the...

Hope your school year is winding down productively or you have embarked on a joyful summer, Reader. We are exactly one month away from the 15th and final Constructing Modern Knowledge Summer Institute, July 9-12th, and there is still room for you! When we say “STEAM,” we mean it!There’s lots of chatter about STEM and STEAM education, but at CMK, we live the values of learning-by-doing, creativity, and blurring the artificial boundaries between subject areas.
